new things…

When is the last time you tried something new?

My husband and I have realized that we were getting bored, doing the same things over and over again…  All of our “dates” pretty much revolved around eating out at the same restaurants every week instead of doing something fun and/or rewarding.  We were operating on auto-pilot at home… each doing chores or something mindless on our own.  It’s easy to get in a rut like that and forget to make joy a priority in your life.  And it takes energy, focus, and conscious effort to break out of that rut.  We really want joy to be a priority in our lives, so we’ve decided to start trying one new thing each week just to keep things fun and exciting…

According to several articles I’ve read recently, trying new things will also help our moods, our stress-level, and our overall mental health…

  • Psychologist Rich Walker of Winston-Salem State University looked at 30,000 event memories and over 500 diaries, ranging from durations of 3 months to 4 years, and says that people who engage in a variety of experiences are more likely to retain positive emotions and minimize negative ones than people who have fewer experiences.
  • Doing unique, random, different, and ridiculous things is a good way to exercise the mind and promote new ways of thinking about the world around us. One hour of increased brain activity via thinking a lot or experiencing new stimuli can make you smarter, more energetic, more creative, more sociable, and more open to new experiences and ways of thinking.
Last weekend we went to the Roller Derby, this weekend we’re taking a rock-climbing class together, next week we’ll try some sexy skyping while I’m out of town (oh hush, we’re married… it’s legal!), the week after that we’ll be moving to Savannah, GA (which will keep things exciting for sure)… that’s all we have planned so far, but I’m looking forward to the fun of us finding something new to try each week.

Have you tried anything new recently?
